One of my favorite artist’s these days is Wintley Phipps. I had never heard of him until late last year when I happened across the video clip below on another blog. In this clip Wintley tells the story of the origin of the tune to Amazing Grace, one of the most cherished hymns of our faith. Even as the clip is a bit lengthy (8:49), it will be well worth the time you take to view it. Later in the week I’ll have more to say about God’s Amazing Grace. Enjoy the clip.

Jason,
What are you doing watching Gaither Videos contributing to the world domination of Gaitherism ??? Good thing You-Tube has it on here, because it would probably cost you $49.95 at the local bookstore for half the DVD (shameful exploitation).
Bill Gaither has exploited little ‘ole blue haired ladies and men named Junior and Bub long enough. Are you wit’ me? It’s time for the church to rrrriiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiise up!!!! and say ” No More!! I have a dream . . . of a day….. when all Gaither videos will be free for all people……… They will not just be for those that can make three monthly payments of $19.95 or those that choose to do without internet and phone lines so they can have VTN programming. But, I have a dream of the day when all those who want to watch Bill Gaither can do so unencumbered by the tyranny of outrageous price markups at Lifeway stores. Yes I have a dream.
I didn’t land on the Gaither Homecoming program, it landed on me. We shall overcome, and its a place called You-tube. I may not get to You Tube, but someone will, and then we’ll all shout “Thank God almighty they ‘re free at last. Thank God almighty, they’re free at last.”
Matthew,
Thanks for the laugh. You have too much time on your hands.
I hesitated posting that, as I didn’t want to offend anyone especially after the three John MacArthur sermons I heard today on the tongue out of James 3. But he was preaching on the tongue . . .and not the hands (eh?)
My favorite terms used for sinners in hymns are :
Newton’s “wretch” in Amazing Grace
Watts’ “worm” in At the Cross
Toplady’s imagery of us needing a “double cure” in Rock of Ages
And, I took time out of my busy writing schedule (paper on Ephesians 2:1) to post on your blog. Now, I must get back to listening to my Bill Gaither record, circa 1972.
